Collection: Koppitsch Wines
The Koppitschs live and farm on the gentle slopes of Burgenland, near the beautiful shores of Lake Fertő. For more than a decade, they have continued a family tradition of natural winemaking that stretches back 500 years.
Alex inherited his knowledge from his father, who taught him the fundamentals of terroir-driven, natural winemaking. He later spent five formative years working as Gerhard Pittnauer’s winemaker and biodynamic assistant. In 2011, equipped with experience and fresh ideas, Alex and his wife Maria set out on their own path, taking over 5.5 hectares of vineyards.
Today, Alex manages the vineyards with the help of his father, Opa Leo. He spends most of his time among the vines, personally handling the pruning with his own experienced hands. Maria, above helping in the cellar, oversees communication and the family’s three sons (Jakob, Pauli, and Alois) who complete the lively picture of the estate.
The Koppitschs follow the biodynamic principles of Rudolf Steiner, always maintaining a holistic perspective. Their wines are made naturally, without artificial additives. Fermentation occurs spontaneously, without temperature control. The wines are neither fined nor filtered, and sulfur is used only minimally for certain wines, shortly before bottling.
The soils around Lake Fertő, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its unique flora and fauna, are remarkably diverse. Alex and Maria’s vineyards grow on a mix of sand, clay, loam, and gravel.
After initially focusing on varietal wines (Welschriesling and Grüner Veltliner for whites; Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch, and Sankt Laurent for reds) the couple shifted direction in 2017. This marked the beginning of a new chapter, with greater emphasis on soil expression and blends that unite different grape varieties from similar soil types. For example, Homok(“Sand”) brings together parcels planted on various sandy soils into a single bottle.
Sustainability is central to the Koppitschs’ philosophy. They strive to minimize their environmental impact in every aspect, from their modest lifestyle to the use of natural corks, lightweight bottles, single-piece labels, and recycled, unprinted cardboard packaging.
