Clair Obscur
Pierre Clair’s story begins in the 1960s, when he first planted vines on his parents’ land near the village of Corpeau in the Côte d’Or, producing just enough for experiments and personal consumption. He and his wife, Jennifer, eventually took over his grandfather’s estate in 2006, working evenings and weekends alongside their jobs at other local wineries.
Initially, they followed classical winemaking methods, but after encountering several avant-garde natural wine pioneers, they embraced a more adventurous, non-interventionist approach. Today, they farm 3.5 hectares biodynamically. Most of their vineyards are situated at 200–250 meters above sea level in a moderate continental climate, planted on soils with varied clay-marl-alluvial upper layers over a Middle Jurassic Oxfordian–Callovian limestone subsoil.
Cellar work is precise yet non-interventional. The whites undergo gentle whole-cluster pressing, followed by fermentation and maturation in small, previously used barrels. The reds are fermented exclusively with whole clusters on their lees, then aged in small barrels. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, with sulfur added only if necessary at bottling, never exceeding 10–20 mg/L per batch.
