Pelo is a tribute to Olivier’s grandfather, Pierre, who first introduced him to winemaking as a child and played a key role in the creation of Clos des Plantes. A devoted Saint-Émilion enthusiast, Olivier chose his grandfather’s nickname for this cuvée, which is made mostly from Cabernet Franc.

Cabernet Franc from the clay-rich Le Bordage vineyard, home to 60-year-old vines, where Pinot d’Aunis and Grolleau are also scattered throughout. These varieties are included in the wine each year in varying proportions.                                                    In 2020, Olivier co-fermented 15% whole-cluster Chenin Blanc with 85% Cabernet Franc to add a touch of lightness and vibrancy. The grapes underwent eight days of maceration in open vats-like a gentle herbal infusion, followed by light pressing to keep the drying tannins in check. The wine was then aged in large, used oak barrels.

Olivier Lejeune丨Clos des Plantes

After spending ten years working in Asia, Olivier,  still disarmingly young, decided to turn his attention to wine. He completed his viticulture studies at the University of Auckland, followed by several formative years at Felton Road, one of New Zealand’s most renowned estates.

In 2017, he returned to France with his wife and young child, where he was mentored by Marc Angeli of Ferme de la Sansonnière, a key figure in the Loire Valley’s natural wine movement.
